Lot 138		Castro, Fidel - Document Signed as Prime Minister of Cuba, 1959 (1926-2016) Cuban revolutionary who overthrew the Batista regime in 1959 and assumed power as Prime Minister (1959-76) and as President from 1976 to 2008. Typed document signed "Fidel Castro" as Prime Ministro, one page, 13½ x 8¾", in the Palace of the President, Mar. 6, 1959, "Year of Liberation". Document issued in the name of Doctor Manuel Urrutia y Lleó, President of the Republic of Cuba (Castro would denounce him as a traitor four months later and dismiss him), and approved by the Council of Ministers and Castro, regarding abolitioning privileges that were created with the sole purpose of easing the impunity of crimes, torture, and other acts of violence perpetrated and carried out to stifle heroic revolutionary action. Countersigned by the minister of justice. The blue paper seal of the President of the Republic of Cuba, featuring the Cuban coat of arms, appears intact at lower right; embossed seals of the prime minister and the minister of justice are with their signatures. Lot 139		Castro, Fidel - Early Signed, Inscribed Photo (1926-2016) Cuban revolutionary and prime minister who took power January 1, 1959. Black and white photograph signed and inscribed in Spanish: "A mi querido amigo y familia Conde grandes luchadores por nuestra patria, Fidel Castro Ruz Agosto 17-1955" [To my dear friend and family Conde great fighters for our homeland…August 17, 1955], 6 x 4", no place. The photo shows a youthful Castro sitting on a sofa and reading a newspaper. Stamped on the verso is "Bohemia Archivo" with the date "1953" penned in. Also stamped is "Propiedad de Regino Boti" and penned in blue ink below that is "Propiedad del Dr. Manuel Conde. 1955." Minor silvering around edges, else fine. Castro was 27 years old when this photo was taken (1953) and 29 when he signed it. Boldly penned and signed. In 1953 Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his revolutionary activities but was released in May 1955 during a general amnesty declared by Batista. Lot 140		Dayan, Moshe and Yitzhak Rabin. 1. Moshe Dayan. (1915-1981). Israeli military leader and politician. First Day Cover featuring Harry S Truman and Winston Churchill at the Iron Curtain speech in 1946 (SC #1499, Independence, Missouri, May 8, 1973) signed ("M. Dayan"), in black ink. Card found inside the envelope details the cover and Winston Churchill (SC #1264). Fine. 2. Yitzhak Rabin. (1922-1995). 5th Prime Minister of Israel. First Day Cover featuring Premier Rabin and President Ford at their their first meeting of 1976 (Washington, D.C., January 27, 1976) signed ("Y. Rabin"), in black ink. Fine. Lot 141		Dorticos Torrado, Osvaldo - President of Cuba from 1959 until 1976 (1919-1983) Dorticos was a Cuban politician and lawyer who opposed Fulgencio Batista and participated in the Civil Resistance Movement. After the success of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, Dorticós was appointed Minister of Revolutionary Laws by Fidel Castro and was instrumental in drafting revolutionary legislation such as the Agrarian Reform Act and the Fundamental Organic Law that supplanted the Constitution of 1940. Dorticós was appointed President of Cuba by the Council of Ministers on July 17, 1959. As President, he represented Cuba at the Summit of Non-Aligned Nations in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (1961), and at the Summit of the Organization of American States in Punta del Este, Uruguay (1962). During the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Dorticós gave a speech at the United Nations in which he announced that Cuba possessed nuclear weapons but did not want to use them. When Cuba's Constitution of 1976 was implemented, Fidel Castro became Head of State and Dorticós was named President of the National Bank and a member of the Council of State. Typed letter signed "Osvaldo Dorticos Torrado" as president of Cuba, one page, 9¾ x 7¼", on official letterhead, in Spanish, Havana, Oct. 3, 1962. Headed "Year of Planification." To H.K. Thompson, Jr. of New York City, acknowledging receipt of Thompson's letter of August 28, in which he sent a copy of The Independent to Dorticos. Dortcios closes his letter with "Patria o Muerte / Venceremos [Homeland or Death / We Shall Overcome"], the iconic expression used by Fidel Castro at the end of his speeches. A second letter from Carlos Rafael Rodríguez, president of the National Institute of Agrarian Reform, also thanks Thompson for a copy of The Independent containing a copy of an article titled "The Right Wing." Lot 142		Gómez y Báez, Máximo - Signed Photo of Cuban Revolutionary Commander Against Spain (1836-1905) Born in Santo Domingo, he joined the Cuban revolution against Spanish rule, and during the unsuccessful Ten Years� War (1868�78) rose through the ranks to become commander in chief of the Cuban revolutionary forces. When that war ended inconclusively, with a general amnesty and limited concessions to the Cubans, Gómez and other Cuban revolutionary leaders went into exile. Gómez, who was a master strategist, returned to Cuba with José Martí in 1895 to reassume control of of the revolutionary forces. Gómez had hoped that the United States would enter the war to protect American property, which it did, but the result was that the heroics of Gómez and other Cuban revolutionaries were overshadowed. In 1902, when the U.S. gave limited freedom to Cuba, Gómez could have been elected president but chose not to accept public office. Cabinet photo signed "General M. Gomez" at top left and dated "15 Abril/05" in the lower left border," 6 x 4¾". The albumen photo shows a chest-up portrait of the white-haired, mustachioed general. Small label at lower right of photographer "Urbano Gómez Toro / Habana." Minor toning and a few background specks; some tape on creases on verso. Boldly signed and dated two months before his death. Lot 143		Guevaro, Ernesto "Che" - Autograph Note Signed (1928-1967) Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat, and military theorist. Autograph note signed "Che," on a 4 x 3¼" piece of paper with uneven right margin, June (19)58. In Spanish, to Moises. Partial translation: "Order enough men to build the house [or possibly 'do the thing'] if not…other works more important. At the first opportunity have me call Benitez. You tell him." Very good. Lot 144		Maceo Grajales, Antonio and Máximo Gómez y Báez--Document Signed by Two Cuban Generals in the War of Independence Against Spain. Antonio Maceo (1845-1896) was a mulatto general called the "Bronze Titan." He was second-in-command of the Cuban army of independence, under Máximo Gómez. Partly-printed document signed by Antonio Maceo ("A. Maceo") and by Máximo Gómez ("M. Gómez"), one page, in Spanish, 8½ x 11¾, "En Campaña [in the countryside]", August 26, 1895. Promoting Lt. Colonel Tomás Padró Griñan to Colonel in the 1st Corps of the Liberation Army of the East, for his services toward independence. Blind embossed stamp at top center and blue oval stamp at lower left; notary stamp on verso. Overall toning and some foxing. Lot 145		Maceo Grajales, Antonio--Military Orders During the Cuban War of Independence (1845-1896) Maceo was a mulatto general called the "Bronze Titan." He was second-in-command of the Cuban army of independence, under Máximo Gómez. Autograph letter signed "A. Maceo", 2 pages (front/back of one sheet), in Spanish, 8¾ x 6½". To Lt. Col. Gonzalez, translated: "Arrived, without incident, I am being escorted by forces of Major Tomas Gonzalez; I believe that if yours are cautious and active they willo get through without (firing) one shot. Give orders to keep everything in absolute secrecy. The guides should, by whatever means, take you through where I did, or through the place they are familiar with; but without delay, even if the weather is bad. Major Ramos already knows and is well aware of the means you should serve him. Give receipt to Major Federico Nuñez for 10 centenes, which he should take for me to that base camp, and bring to these headquarters. If for resources for General Bermudez and other compatriots, you have to spend something, do it. Bring, by any means, my assistant to Pedro. Last night he ran away with a bomb and box of medicines. Try not to leave my aide and escort, and neither those of General Diaz." The letter is toned and foxed and has old tape remnants along the margins. What makes this letter especially poignant is that Maceo's position was betrayed to the Spanish and two days after writing this letter, he and his small troop of men were intercepted by the Spanish. Maceo was shot and his men ran away under intense fire. Only Lieutenant Francisco Gómez, son of Commander-in-Chief Máximo Gómez, stayed to protect his general's body and was himself killed by machete strikes. Both were later buried in the Monumento El Cacahual south of Havana, and the site is a place of pilgrimage for Cubans. Estimate Value $400 - 600 View details and enlarged photo	Unsold
Lot 146		Rare 14th Century Charter Granting Five Acres of Land dated 1332 in Middleton, Greater Manchester, England. Original charter of Henry Dyke and Sabina his wife, granting five acres to John Dyer of Halstead the Sunday before the the Feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr which would place the date the middle of December, 1332. Charter boasts both wax seals of the grantor and his wife one of them showing Adam and Eve and the Tree of Knowledge and the other possibly a religious scene. Examined in frame, document measures 4 x 9" beautifully matted and framed in gilt wood to 11 x 14" with shadow boxes to protect and showcase the wax seals yet remaining attached to document bands. Lot 147		Tito, Josip Broz - Signed Photo of the Yugoslav Strongman (1892-1980). Yugoslav revolutionary and statesman who dominated Yugoslav politics for over four decades. During World War II, he led the Yugoslav resistance, the Partisans (1941-45). He was Prime Minister (1944-63), President (later President for Life) (1953-80) of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). From 1943 to his death in 1980, he held the rank of Marshal of Yugoslavia, serving as the supreme commander of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). He was known as a "benevolent dictator" who held Yugoslvia together. After his death, nationalist aspirations took over and resulted in five years of warfare and the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Lot 148		Unique Collection of Signatures by Anastasio Somoza, Leonidas Trujillo, Antanas Smetona & Manuel L. Quezon. Fascinating autograph collection very nicely archived in a photo album of stamps and covers. The first of these are signed by Anastasio Somoza, Leonidas Trujillo and Antanas Smetona certainly historic figures for their authoritorian rule. Anastasio Somoza has signed 12 individual stamps of The Republic of Nicaragua, one of every denomination. Since the stamps are colorful his signature does not pop on some as well as others. From Leonidas Trujillo dated 1931 is a collection of Dominican Republic stamp of 5 different denominations all 5 signed by Trujillo. From 1941 one signed uncut block of commemorative Lithuanian stamps signed by Antanas Smetona. From 1938, a signed cover by the great Manuel L. Quezon, President of the Philippines from 1935-1944. Curiously, there are two signed commemorative stamps and covers by John Olin horse breeder and winner of the 1974 Kentucky Derby with the colt Cannonade rounding out the collection.
